Service life in an institutional setting for transport wheelchairs can be as little as one year. Chrome alloy chassis bend and buckle with continuous use. Folding parts, as with standard wheelchair design, mean greater possibility of wear at the most vulnerable areas. Since broken and bent wheelchair parts represent a hazard to both the person being transported and the attendant, standard chairs must be taken out of service for immediate maintenance. Frequent maintenance means additional chairs must be purchased in order to ensure an adequate supply. Shorter service life means greater cost, as damaged or worn transport wheelchairs must be taken out of service and replaced.

While chrome alloys offer some measure of corrosion resistance, exposure to damp conditions will rapidly reduce service life. Care must be taken with standard wheelchairs to ensure that all chairs are collected and stored indoors every day. Using high-grade steel and professional finishes makes exposure to weather and wet a virtual a non-issue.

Durability is another key issue. Steel transport chairs are far more durable than standard, chrome wheelchairs. A rugged, well-built steel transport chair will provide service for many years, as opposed to the short lifespan of standard chairs. Greater durability means longer service life, and longer service life means reduced cost of ownership. Durability can be a direct correlative of increased return on investment.

Better strength and durability, in addition to reducing the need for frequent replacement, can minimize the need for multiple styles of transport chair in the same institution. Standard wheelchairs are unsuitable for bariatric use. Due to the inherent strength of the materials used, steel transport chairs have a much higher weight capacity, with base models being able to transport patients who would normally require a specialized bariatric chair.

Standardizing on a single model for both bariatric and non-bariatric use reduces cost as well as assuring that transport chairs are available for the vast majority of patients.

For superior service life and lower total cost of ownership, there is no comparison. Steel transport chairs are the obvious choice for a better bottom line.

A Houston family by the name of Friedman decided to add an outdoor summer kitchen and screened-in dining room to the rear of their Craftsman style, two-story house. At a certain point in time during the construction of this new room, they decided that it was time to develop an entirely new master plan that and Houston landscape concept.

This new design would have a new custom swimming pool and patio that would connect to the new addition to an arbor at the other end of the pool-effectively extending the semi-outdoor space of the outdoor kitchen into the wide, open space of the pool, patio, and backyard.

Our main objective in this project was to take an otherwise enormous tract of Houston landscape and turn it into a more inviting and intimate setting that would appear interesting and mesmerizing as opposed to vast and overwhelming. In order to do this, two things were necessary. We had to create some very unique structures, and we had to construct them in such a way as to create a very controlled sense of drama.

One of the two most prominent elements on this vast expanse of Houston landscape was the ornate custom swimming pool that we redesigned for the Friedman’s. It consisted of a two-level structure, with a fountain on one end. In the fountain there were three bubblers that shot water up into the air.

The second part of the pool was lowered, and made accessible by four steps that were added to either side of the fountain. The size of these steps encourages a very gradual descent to the lower portion of the patio. This generates a great sense of transition, and gives the eye plenty of opportunity to take in the arbor, parterre garden, and custom patio design

The bottom of the fountain was completely covered in blue glass tile and lighted from within. Although small in comparison to the rest of the pool, the uniqueness of the fountain’s design made it one of the most prominent areas of interests, ideal for pulling chairs around its perimeter.

This fountain adds something of a spa element to the whole setting because it resides on the same upper plane as the spa. Its upper end is only 6 inches deep, but its lower end is 18 inches deep, which makes it something of a mini spa in its own right because it is both lighted and heated. People often recline here much like they do in the spa, dangling their feet over the edge of the waterfall that pours into the lower level of the pool.

This waterfall was one of the most unique features we built for the Friedman’s. We had a quarry cut a slab of stone in a radius design and cut runnels in it with a diamond saw. After we thermal-finished the slab, we covered the front end with a custom blend of glass tile.

The various colors and hues in the glass are intentionally reflective of the surrounding Houston landscape. There is also a deliberate copper hue to the design to further magnify the reflection of pool lights.

This waterfall does so much to establish the sophisticated, controlled sense of drama that we needed to connote intimacy and interest on such a large area of Houston landscape. The variation of tile coloration, especially when catching either sunlight or pool lights, especially mirrors the elegance of the adjacent parterre garden and the many flowers that adorn the side of the arbor entrance.

The custom coping and patio surrounding the fountain and the lower portion of the same are made from the same materials. The coping of the pool is a lighter colored material known as Leuders Limestone. It has a rich hue that provides a superb compliment to both the architecture of the home.

The patio itself is made of Pennsylvania full color sandstone. This patio was built with concealed water jets so water can rise up mysteriously from its surface and provide special effects when illuminated at night.

When we completed this project, we had laid over 2,000 square feet of paving. Nevertheless, we were ultimately successful in establishing special area of interest and a feeling of drama through design. The key to this lay in the many grade changes we made. By varying things like patio elevation and step width, we could make even the largest of hardscapes on the Houston landscape feel intimate and inviting.

Today, Ask Toy Tech received an inquiry regarding a subject that is always of great interest during the holiday season: CANDLES

More specifically, the Creativity for Kids Beeswax Candle Making Kit. (See photo, below)

ToysPeriod doesn’t as yet carry candle making kits. Perhaps one day.

However, whether we carry an item or not, an inquiry usually evolves into a question, and a question always deserves the best response we at ToysPeriod can conjure without appearing to trip over ourselves philosophically when a straight-from-the-shoulder response is all that is required.

The following is a summary of the discussion that ensued after this inquiry appeared earlier in the week. (Our guess is that it is guilty of some level of tripping):

First Consideration - Intent at the Moment of Ownership

The place of candle making sets in the grand scheme of toys and toy making seems to revolve around the status of the toy when first in the possession of its final owner. With respect to ownership, historically, three general categories seem to immediately present themselves:

First, there are toys secured (and owned) primarily for the pure satisfaction of possessing them. We might lightly refer to this faction of toy owners as the “Do not touch my toys” group. Certain collectors of dolls, miniatures, cards, bottles and their caps and thousands of other items, including pinned insects, may fall into this general category.

Second, there are toys presented to the consumer (owner) fully formed, and treasured, not as part of a collection, but as a result of the promise they represent of creative application. That is, once owned, it is the responsibility of the owner to discover creative ways in which to employ and enjoy them.

For instance, Frisbees thrown from the topmost section of Hoover Dam (don’t do this), or more traditionally, a ball (owned) and sent hurtling toward an individual holding another (owned) toy in this category, perhaps with the word SLUGGER emblazoned on its side.

Finally, there are toys which provide the appropriate materials from which other items of value (aesthetic or utilitarian or both) may be molded or formed.

A set for making candles would logically fall into this third group.

Paper, yarn, thread, plaster, clay, paint, wax, tallow, dye, natural oils, woods, and a legion of other materials can be presented to the recipient with the idea of allowing said recipient to enjoy combining, entwining, forming, baking, sewing, etc., the materials into recognizable items to be enjoyed.

Bean bags, candles, straw men, dolls, chairs, trains, cars, houses, ponies (made of other than flesh and bone) can at times credit their existence to this third category of toy.

A Brief History of the Candle

Now, since this particular discussion owes its very existence to an original inquiry regarding a humble candle making set, ToysPeriod’s friends felt it only fair to chip in a bit of extra value in this space regarding candles (which they have so labeled “dispensers of light and joy”).

One individual offered, “that candles are readily recognizable by children and adults alike as sources of cheer, pleasant aroma and perhaps creators of the relaxing or festive atmosphere.” Reaction: HEAR, HEAR!

Thus encouraged, another of the group offered, “There was a time when candles were every bit as essential as the light bulb is today.”

Reaction: NO DOUBT!!

And a third, “The first candles were developed by the ancient Egyptians who used torches made by soaking reeds in molten tallow.”

Reaction: We are getting warmer!

Like popcorn, here are the remainder of the comments regarding candles that were thrown into the now glowing flame:

“Wicks weren’t developed until the Roman period when travelers, including soldiers, along the Appian Way needed light to travel in the dark.”

“It was not until the Middle Ages that beeswax was introduced into candle making. Beeswax produces much less smoke than tallow and also smells much sweeter than the acrid odor tallow presents to the environment.”

“America’s colonial women contributed to candle making by introducing bayberries. Wax made of this berry burns clean and is sweet smelling, but the extracting of the wax from the berries was tedious, so the use of the bayberry soon was snuffed out (pun).”

“In the 18th century, spermaceti, a wax made of whale oil became available in excellent quantity. In addition to the excellent qualities of beeswax, spermaceti wax kept its shape in the heat of summer on a sill, gave off a sweet scent, and burned longer.”

“The first candles referred to by historians as “standard” were made of spermaceti wax.”

“Machine made candles were first introduced by Joseph Morgan in 1834.”

“In 1850, paraffin wax candles became available. Paraffin alone was too soft, but by adding a bit of stearic acid to the mix, the harder, more durable candles that we know today resulted.”

Finally, a heretofore silent individual asked about the PERMA-Candle. We were puzzled. We had never before heard tell of a PERMA-Candle.
